Source: Monsanto news release

Debbie Lyons-Blythe, White City, Kansas, was recognized by Gov. Sam Brownback yesterday for being Monsanto's America's Farmers Mom of the Year 2012.

Gov. Brownback hosted a ceremony at Kansas' Department of Agriculture to honor Lyons-Blythe in front of her family, friends and members of the media. In addition, she was presented with a ceremonial check for $10,000 from Monsanto for being named America's Famers Mom of the Year for the Southwest Region as well as the overall national winner.

"I'm proud to recognize a great Kansas rancher and farm mom as America's Farmers Mom of the Year," Gov. Brownback said. "Debbie is a perfect example of the kind of hardworking, dynamic people who see to it that our farms, families and communities succeed. This is a well-deserved honor."

Lyons-Blythe's five children, Meghan, Allie, Trenton, Tyler and Eric, along with her husband, Duane, joined her at the ceremony. They had previously submitted a nomination on her behalf to tell judges from American Agri-Women and Monsanto why Lyons-Blythe should be a candidate for the "Mom of the Year" title.

"Not only did Mom give us her eye color and smile, she shared with us her values and love of agriculture," they wrote. "It doesn't take long to figure out what's in her heart. Her love for agriculture is evident when reading her blog, hearing her speeches and seeing her work."

From nearly 1,000 nominations, five regional winners were selected by American Agri-Women and Monsanto. Each received a $5,000 cash prize from Monsanto, and Lyons-Blythe received an additional $5,000 for receiving the national title through online voting. All five regional winners' nominations are posted in their entirety at www.AmericasFarmers.com.

"We received nominations for hundreds of farm moms, all with a passion for agriculture and a zest for life on a family farm," said Consuelo Madere, America's Farmers Mom of the Year spokesperson. "Debbie Lyons-Blythe represents these women well. From her dedication to her family and her farm, and in reaching consumers in her community and well beyond, she is truly inspirational."

Lyons-Blythe and her family run Blythe Angus near White City. They raise 250 registered Angus cows and sell registered bulls. They also run a commercial heifer development program, as well as a diversified cropping operation. While all five of her children work on the ranch, it's Lyons-Blythe who provides the daily labor. She credits Duane with supporting her as she pursues her passion for ranching.

A graduate of Kansas State University, Lyons-Blythe serves on the board of directors for the Kansas Livestock Association, Kansas Angus Association and National Cattlemen's Beef Association. She authors an online blog, "Life on a Kansas Cattle Ranch" (www.kansascattleranch.blogspot.com )," to give consumers a glimpse of life on a family farm.
