USDA: MAY'S PORK PRODUCTION SETS NEW RECORD Jun. 26, 2012 BrownfieldAgNews reports: USDA reports May pork production was a new all-time record for the month at 1.927 billion pounds. That's a 9% increase from May 2011 with the slaughter also up 9% at 9.285 million head and the average live weight increasing two pounds to 277 pounds. Beef production was 2.232 billion pounds, 5% above a year ago, with slaughter up 2% to 2.876 million head and the average live weight surging 27 pounds to 1,280 pounds. Veal came out at 10.4 million pounds, 1% more than last year, with the 3% decline in slaughter to 59,200 head canceled out by the seven pound rise in the average live weight to 295 pounds. Lamb and mutton production was 13.6 million pounds, 5% larger than a year ago with the slaughter increasing slightly to 180,400 head and the average live weight jumping eight pounds at 151 pounds per animal. Total red meat production during May 2012 was 4.183 billion pounds, up 7% from May 2011, and for the year to date, production is 20.247 billion pounds, 1% ahead of last year's pace. Tweet |
