Jul. 3, 2012 BrownfieldAgNews reports: Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack is calling on House leadership to make passage of the farm bill a top priority. Vilsack is reacting to statements by House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, who said he was pushing the "pause button" on the farm bill to assess the political situation. But Vilsack says that could cause farmers and others to push the "panic button", because delaying the bill could cause great uncertainty. Vilsack says he is particularly concerned about disaster aid programs. He points to the impact of fires in the western part of the country and the potential impact of drought in the Midwest and Southwest on livestock operators. Vilsack says those disaster aid programs have expired and passage of the new farm bill is necessary to put them back in place. House Ag Committee chair Frank Lucas has indicated that farm bill markup will begin once Congress returns from its 4th of July recess. Tweet |
