ANIMAL WELFARE APPROVED BISON RANCHERS PUBLISH BOOK
Source: Animal Welfare Approved news release

Animal Welfare Approved farmers Kathy and Ken Lindner chronicle the challenges they have faced as first generation grassfed bison producers in a recently released memoir, Standing into the Storm. The Lindners' book charts a journey which led them from the corporate world of mergers, layoffs and downsizing, to establishing Lindner Bison in Northeastern California - one of only three bison farms in the nation to be certified by Animal Welfare Approved.

Kathy and Ken do not come from a long line of farmers. In 1993, as self-confessed "middle-aged beginners" with no agricultural background, they both decided to change their careers and pursue an active retirement, raising and selling grassfed bison meat. Starting with an irrigated 225-acre alfalfa and grass hay farm and four bison, Standing into the Storm documents the next 19 years of their lives, during which they gave up their careers and embarked on a journey of trial and error and discovery, risking their financial security to make their dreams a reality, and ultimately challenging the intensive meat industry itself.

In their book, Kathy and Ken recount their disillusionment over their early efforts to sell into a retail market designed to serve and benefit only large-scale producers and corporations; their countless attempts to convince disinterested banks to loan them money to buy farmland; their determination to reestablish a traditional bison herd in a small part of northeast California; and their experience as the first farmers to produce and sell grassfed red meat in southern California farmers' markets.

Andrew Gunther, Program Director for Animal Welfare Approved, says: "Standing into the Storm is a captivating and inspiring tale, documenting the Lindners' hard work not only to establish a high-welfare, grassfed bison ranch, but also to reconnect today's consumers with how their food is produced and to highlight the importance of sustainable farming. Animal Welfare Approved is proud to be part of their ongoing story."

Standing into the Storm is available through LindnerBison.com, Amazon.com and EatWild.com, as well as via the UCLA Library. It is also available as an eBook through Amazon, iTunes, and Barnes and Noble.
