CHUCK HILHORST RECEIVES CANADIAN SEED TRADE ASSN ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
Source: Canadian Seed Trade Association news release

In the words of his nominator: "With quiet diplomacy and persistence, Chuck Hilhorst has helped to build and maintain a shared vision for the global seed industry."

In recognition of his dedication, commitment and career-long contribution to the seed industry in Canada and abroad, Chuck Hilhorst of John Zuelzer and Son is the 2012 recipient of the CSTA Seed Achievement Award.

Chuck has always taken an active and keen interest in national and international seed trade. That was confirmed in 1986 when he established John Zuelzer & Son Canada Ltd. a brokerage firm specializing in trading, marketing, and production of forage and turf seed for cool season areas of the world. He quickly gained national and international respect for his knowledgeable and diplomatic approach to seed trade and his extensive understanding of the rules and regulations that govern the movement of seed across international borders.

Throughout his career, Chuck has volunteered his considerable expertise and special brand of enthusiasm to a number of seed associations and organizations, to the benefit of the entire seed sector.

He served on the Board of Directors of the Canadian Seed Trade Association for 10 years; and was the President of the Seed Multiplication Division (SMD) of the CSTA. The SMD was responsible for managing multiplication, seed production and distribution of a number of forage varieties developed by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. This work helped to shape current policies and procedures for forage seed variety release and management.

Chuck was a founding member of the CSTA International Committee and served as its Chair for several terms. Under his leadership, the CSTA tackled some of its toughest issues including phytosanitary barriers against Canadian seed exports, and extravagant European subsidies on forage and turf seed.

In 2010, Chuck took on one of his biggest volunteer activities. He served as the Chair of the Organizing Committee for the 2010 World Seed Congress, which was hosted by CSTA in Calgary, Alberta. Over 1,000 delegates from more than 50 countries participated in the Congress which has been billed as one of the most successful to date.

Chuck Hilhorst received the Seed Achievement award at the awards celebration at the CSTA's 89th Annual Meeting in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.
