USDA: HAY PRODUCTION DOWN 16% DUE TO DROUGHT Aug. 21, 2012
BrownfieldAgNews reports:
Some preliminary numbers showing just how much the drought has affected the alfalfa hay crop in the United States this summer.
USDA's National Ag Statistics Service reports the acres of alfalfa and alfalfa mixtures harvested for hay as of August 1st were down 2.1 percent compared to 2011 but tons per acre yields are 14.1 percent below last year. So combine the two numbers and we find overall hay production is down 16 percent compared to 2011.
