Aug. 31, 2012 BrownfieldAgNews reports: With the remnants of Tropical Storm Isaac makes its way inland there are added concerns for crops. U.S. Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack says the storm could impact cotton and rice production depending on how hard it hits and there's a lot of concern about the soybean harvest. "It may make it very difficult, if not impossible, for some of these soybean producers to basically harvest whatever crop they may have." It's challenging years like this that Vilsack says everyone is grateful for crop insurance and he says these natural disasters underscore the need for a strong safety net. Livestock producers in drought stricken areas are hoping to get some of the storm system in hopes of planting cover crops and maybe greening up of pastures. Forecasters put the storm's current path through much of Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio over the next three to four days. Tweet |
