IOWA SENATOR PREDICTS CONGRESS WILL PASS ONE YEAR EXTENSION OF FARM BILL
BrownfieldAgNews reports:

Congress will be unable to reach agreement on a new farm bill in September and will be forced to pass a one-year extension of the current farm bill before it expires on September 30th.

That prediction is made by Senate Ag Committee member, Iowa Senator Charles Grassley.

"I'm predicting that because, with the few days we have, I think it's difficult to reach an agreement," Grassley says. "I hope otherwise."

Grassley says pushing the new five-year farm bill back into 2013 will have two significant and negative consequences for farmers.

"One, farmers only have a 12-month view ahead of what the farm legislation is," he says, "and secondly-and more of a problem-is the fact that when we come back next year to negotiate, we're going to be negotiating under more strict budget guidelines.

"It's going to make it more difficult for us to pass a good farm bill and a good safety net."

Congress will return to work next week, but has only eight working days on its September calendar.
