 Sep. 12, 2012 Source: Purdue University news release Purdue Extension will host a free webinar to help farmers and others in agriculture make better business decisions following the worst drought in decades. Purdue Extension agricultural economist Corinne Alexander will present "Agricultural Outlook 2013" Thursday (Sept. 13) at 8:30 a.m. (EDT). Participants with high-speed Internet access can find the program at https://gomeet.itap.purdue.edu/outlook/. The webinar, designed for farmers, landowners, input suppliers and anyone interested in the future of agriculture, will include price outlook and marketing strategies for the coming year. The record-setting drought has farmers bracing themselves for low corn and soybean yields, but demand for those crops and other grains and food items, will remain high. The webinar will help answer the question of how high prices could rise. The drought also is challenging much of the livestock industry. The webinar will include information about the decreased meat supply from herd liquidation and how it will eventually lead to increased prices. "The livestock sector faces another year of extremely high feed costs and reduced availability of corn," Alexander said. "The sector will be negotiating a period of sizable losses, looking forward to a future period of profitability after the 2013 harvest." The webinar also will cover 2013 trends for input costs, such as labor and materials. Alexander will discuss which inputs are headed higher and how those increases could affect profit margins for 2013 and 2014. Land use will be another discussion topic. According to Alexander, good land will become even more of a premium following the drought. "The battle for acres is under way this fall as producers consider seeding winter wheat or other cover crops," she said. "This program will demonstrate the economic implications of the battle by showing which crops are currently bidding most aggressively for the limited acres." The 2012 land value and cash rent survey also is on the agenda. Land values and rents are expected to move higher in 2013. Alexander will discuss how much those values are likely to increase and how much higher they can rise before they are too high to remain economical.
