REPORT FROM "FARM BILL NOW" RALLY HELD IN WASHINGTON YESTERDAY
BrownfieldAgNews reports:

The Farm Bill Now rally, with hundreds of farmers in attendance, was kicked off this morning in Washington, DC by leaders of the American Farm Bureau and the National Farmers Union who introduced lawmakers in tune with their cause.

Senate Ag Committee Chair Debbie Stabenow had one of the loudest rallying cries, "We need a Farm Bill! We need it NOW!" Stabenow is credited for getting the Senate Ag Farm bill through committee and passed by the full Senate in June.

Meanwhile, a House Ag Committee-passed farm bill has not been scheduled for floor debate.

South Dakota Representative Kristi Noem told the crowd there's no excuse for the House leadership to drag their feet. She says the House Ag Committee proved how to come together in a bipartisan way and pass the bill that should have gone straight to the House floor.

Noem told the crowd, "You know, I've heard a lot of excuses as to why this farm bill isn't done yet, and, frankly, I'm tired of excuses. Washington, DC makes up too many excuses and I'm not taking it anymore. I hope you aren't taking it any more. Let's get the work done and let's get it done now." Congresswoman Noem also brought the same message to the House floor today.

Kansas Senator Jerry Moran had advice for House leadership and members. "If you have objections with this farm bill, bring it to the floor, work it, amend it and send it to conference so that these issues can be resolved!" Moran was referring to the nutrition program cuts in the House Ag bill.

Moran says the key is to get a farm bill to conference committee - where the differences can be worked out AFTER the election.

House Ag Committee Ranking leader Collin Peterson told the crowd that the rally is a good start but that lawmakers need to get several hundred phone calls and letters from farmers in order to get the leadership to take action and pass a farm bill now.
