AMERICAN SOYBEAN ASSN ISSUES COMMENTS ON BEE POLLINATOR ISSUE
American Soybean Association (ASA) reports:

ASA last week provided comments to the Scientific Advisory Panel reviewing the "Pollinator Risk Assessment Framework" being considered by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

ASA has been closely monitoring these issues amid concerns about unexplained deaths of honeybee populations.

ASA's comments state:

"In 2010 more than 30% of all soybean seed was treated with neonicitinoid insecticides for protection after planting.

"While soybean production does not require insect pollination, we appreciate the enormous value of honeybees and other pollinators to commercial agriculture. We stand together with growers of all crops across the United States in searching for answers to the loss of honeybee populations in recent years." ASA's comments state.

"Soybean farmers have achieved increases in productivity due to crop protection products. ASA is cautiously watching the progress of the Agency as the Scientific Advisory Panel meets.

"We are aware of multiple studies showing the complex interactions between pesticides and honeybee health, and recognize that pesticides have not been identified as the cause of these declines," the statement concludes.
