Sep. 21, 2012 BrownfieldAgNews reports: Senate Ag Committee Chairwoman Debbie Stabenow tells reporters that getting a comprehensive farm bill with disaster assistance will be her focus and priority in the Lame Duck session. Stabenow says she's is "shocked" by House leaders' decision not to bring up the farm bill in the House before the election - and now Congress is taking off early for campaigning. House Speaker Boehner has confirmed there will be no action on the farm bill prior to the November general election and that the farm bill we be taken up afterward. Stabenow tells reporters, "We want to hold him to that. I know that the votes are there to get this done. I'm confident we can resolve any concerns in conference committee." Boehner contends there are not enough votes to get it passed now and that's why it's not being brought up. But Stabenow, whose committee got a farm bill to the Senate floor earlier this summer that passed the full Senate predicts a farm bill - with differences ironed out - will pass with bipartisan support. She says there are no good excuses not to. Tweet |
