STINE SEED: ARE 12-INCH ROWS THE FUTURE? Sep. 24, 2012 Source: Stine Seed One of the hottest topics at Stine's Farm Progress show booth this year was narrow-row planting. Currently, 20-inch rows are considered narrow, so Stine's foray into 12-inch corn rows is attracting a lot of attention. Over the years, corn planting populations have increased more than fourfold and row widths have progressively become narrower. At Stine, we've spent considerable time developing genetics that work in higher populations and have the characteristics to maximize yields when planted at increased populations. Testing corn genetics in 12-inch rows allows us to begin looking for the hybrids of tomorrow. We planted more than 2,000 acres of corn in 12-inch rows this spring utilizing specially designed planters. Even with this summer's unusual drought conditions, yield results are impressive. Harvest is underway with three specially, constructed 12-inch row corn heads, one of which was created for us by Calmer Corn Heads. Testing 12-inch rows is another way for Stine to explore generating higher yields by using space more efficiently. As the largest independent seed company in America and one of the industry's largest corn breeding companies, we will continue to be a leader in seed genetics and products through continued innovation and forward thinking.
