PORK PRODUCTION SETS NEW RECORD
BrownfieldAgNews reports:

According to the Ag Department, U.S. pork production was a new record for the month of August.

Pork came out at 1.998 billion pounds, up 6% on the year with slaughter rising 4% to 9.942 million head and the average live weight gaining three pounds at 269 pounds.

Beef was pegged at 2.368 billion pounds, down 1% from August 2011 as a 3% decrease in slaughter, 2.996 million head, canceled out a 30 increase in the average live weight, 1,300 pounds.

Veal production was 10.1 million pounds, 10% less than last year with the kill declining 9% at 72,600 head and average live weight dropping eleven pounds to 237 pounds.

Lamb and mutton production was reported at 14.2 million pounds, 8% above a year ago, with the slaughter up 1% at 200,500 head and average live weight increasing ten pounds to 142 pounds.

Commercial red meat production was also a monthly record, totaling 4.390 billion pounds, up 2% on the year. For the year to date, commercial red meat production is 32.605 billion pounds, 1% more than January to August 2011.
