 Sep. 27, 2012 Source: Penton Media news release Bob Price and his family's Gracie Creek Ranch at Burwell, NE, have been named BEEF magazine's 2012 National Stocker Award winner. Price is the third generation of his family to carve a living from growing cattle on grass. His daughter Lindsey Smith and her husband Clayton, who joined the operation last year, are the fourth. Price is the seventh recipient of the award presented annually by BEEF magazine editors and designed to showcase the best of the best in stocker cattle management and to highlight this critical segment of the beef cattle industry. As this year's honoree, Price will be featured in the October issue of BEEF and recognized during the upcoming National Cattle Industry Convention in Tampa, FL, next February. Price and his family own Gracie Creek Ranch, a yearling-exclusive operation in the storied Nebraska Sandhills. He starts with preconditioned calves of high-quality Angus and Red Angus genetics purchased at area auction barns. Utilizing low-stress handling techniques and a carefully planned grazing management, Gracie Creek Ranch grows the calves from 500-lb. starting weights to 900 lbs. Meticulous business practices enable Price to establish profit goals for each set of calves. Thus, he knows when that goal is achieved so that he can manage his risk with futures and options tools when appropriate. From the time cattle arrive at Gracie Creek, to the time they leave, Price will have sorted them at least five times, swapping cattle among groups to achieve pea-in-a-pod consistency. "Bob doesn't just build uniform load lots," says consultant Terry DeGroff. "He builds uniform pen lots of 200-300 head. That's the single biggest thing he does to add value to the calves."
