FARM BUREAU: THERE WILL BE PLENTY OF BACON Sep. 28, 2012 BrownfieldAgNews reports: Rumors of a bacon shortage are overdone. What began with a news release from Britain's National Pig Association declaring the shortage was dubbed by comedian Stephan Colbert as the oncoming "Aporkalypse." "That's a great name, but no, there's really not any reason for that kind of concern," said John Anderson, economist for the American Farm Bureau Federation. In an interview provided by the Farm Bureau, Anderson says there's no need to worry about not enough pork. "Pork supplies will decrease slightly as we go into 2013, but the idea that there'll be widespread shortages, that we'll run out of pork, that's really overblown," said Anderson. There are more famers downsizing hog herds because of increasing costs of corn and soybean meal, acknowledges Chris Chinn, a hog farmers from Missouri. "Market prices in the grocery store just aren't paying what the farmer needs to make a break-even [price]," said Chinn, "so while there may be less pork on the market, American farmers are still going to be bringing home the bacon." The USDA projects U.S pork supplies will drop about 1.3 percent in the next year and consumer prices for meat, poultry and seafood will increase about 4 percent. The Farm Bureau's Anderson says that's not a lot more than he'd expect in a normal year. Tweet |
