HIGH PLAINS JOURNAL, STAFFERS WIN AWARDS FROM NATIONAL FEDERATION OF PRESS WOMEN Oct. 3, 2012 Source: High Plains Journal news release Associate Editor Jennifer M. Latzke, Graphic Designer Diana Derstein, and High Plains Journal special projects were among 268 distinguished professionals from across the country receiving awards celebrating excellence in communications during the National Federation of Press Women's annual conference held in Scottsdale, Ariz., Sept. 20-22. Awards were given in a wide variety of categories and judged by several Pulitzer Prize winners and educators associated with the Institute of Rural Journalism, based at the University of Kentucky. Entries eligible in the national competition were first-place winning entries at the state level, and were published between Jan. 1, 2011, and Dec. 31, 2011. Latzke received a first place award in the columns category and an honorable mention in the special articles category. Latzke is the current president of the Kansas Professional Communicators, an affiliate state chapter of NFPW. Harvest Heroes was awarded a first place award for the video Mom's Tractor. The Future of Farming Series was awarded second place in the advertorial category. All Aboard Wheat Harvest was awarded second place in the photography for web category and a third place in the special insert category. Derstein received a second place award for cover design. NFPW is a nationwide organization of women and men pursuing careers across the communications spectrum, including print and electronic journalism, freelancing, new media, books, public relations, marketing, graphic design, photography, advertising, radio and television.
