URSA FARMERS' CO-OP OPENS NEW GRAIN ELEVATOR IN MISSOURI Oct. 24, 2012
BrownfieldAgNews reports:
A new grain elevator to serve Northeast Missouri farmers was opened Friday. A ribbon cutting ceremony celebrated the new elevator on the riverfront in Canton, Missouri, owned by the Ursa Farmers' Cooperative.
Farmers in Lewis County and the surrounding area previously had to either transport their grain via ferry to an elevator across the Mississippi River from Canton - or - drive over 20 miles to the closest bridge over the river.
The new grain elevator was built where several blighted properties had stood along the river, including the former Tri State Fertilizer plant. A state grant helped local officials acquire the property. The Ursa Farmers Co-op, made up of 400 farm families, invested $6 Million to build the grain elevator.
