CANADA GRANTS BAYER'S BAYTRILL 100 APPROVAL FOR USE IN NON-LACTATING DAIRY CATTLE
Source: Bayer HealthCare news release

Bayer has received market authorization for BaytrilŪ 100 (enrofloxacin) injectable solution for treating bovine respiratory disease (BRD) in non-lactating dairy cattle less than 20 months of age.

This life-saving antimicrobial is bactericidal, killing the major culprits responsible for BRD in young cattle: Pasteurella multocida and Mannheimia haemolytica. BaytrilŪ 100 is concentration dependent, not timedependent, delivering therapeutic drug concentrations to the lung tissues within two hours of a single subcutaneous dose. By concentrating where it is needed, BaytrilŪ 100 achieves pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic drug ratios1 associated with both the reduction of bacterial resistance selection and improved treatment success.

Available to veterinarians since 2004 for treating recurring BRD in high risk feedlot cattle, Canadian dairy veterinarians can now also breathe easy, knowing that they have a new tool to help them in their fight against BRD in dairy replacement herds. With costs of replacing a dairy heifer in Canada estimated at $2,200 each, veterinarians need a product they know is highly effective for treating repeat pneumonia in these valuable patients.

"Left untreated, respiratory disease in cattle impedes growth and increases morbidity, impacting the bottom line," said Dr. Bruce Kilmer, Bayer HealthCare, Animal Health's Director of Technical Services & Regulatory Affairs. "In fact, research has proven that long-term costs of BRD in dairy replacements include decreased growth, delayed age to first calving, premature culling from the herd and reduced profitability. BaytrilŪ 100 has been trusted by veterinarians for years and is highly effective for the treatment of BRD."

BaytrilŪ 100's proven efficacy in low volume with easy syringeability encourages successful treatment. For non-lactating dairy cattle, the ready-to-use, injectable antimicrobial solution may be administered as a single-dose therapy or as a multiple-day therapy. BaytrilŪ 100 should not be used as a mass medication. The choice of BaytrilŪ 100 as the most appropriate treatment should be confirmed by clinical experience supported, where possible, by pathogen culture and drug susceptibility testing.

Enrofloxacin has demonstrated in vivo activity against Mannheimia haemolytica and Pasteurella multocida, the major pathogenic bacteria associated with BRD. Enrofloxacin is active in vitro against gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria.
