AMERICAN SOYBEAN ASSN'S WISHH, USDA TO OFFER GLOBAL SCHOOL NUTRITION TRAINING Oct. 26, 2012 American Soybean Association (ASA) reports: With support from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Cochran Fellowship Program, WISHH organized training for representatives of developing country school nutrition programs and companies that could make soy-based foods for schools in developing countries. In addition to attending the Midwest Workshop in Illinois, the six participants met with USDA representatives, toured a local school foodservice program and more in the Washington, D.C. area. School meals are standard in America but are new for many developing countries. Due to hunger or malnutrition, an estimated 120 million school-age children around the world are not enrolled in school, according to the U.S. government. As a result of the WISHH-organized program, participants noted the important role of farmers and food companies to see a business opportunity in serving schools as a market for their products. "WISHH recognizes that an extensive, and sometimes complex, value-chain is needed to supply schools with healthy foods," said WISHH Executive Director Jim Hershey. "Our work with developing country food companies and others is helping U.S. soy serve the growing healthy school nutrition movement." Tweet |
