Nov. 1, 2012 Source: Agriculture Future of America news release Many people say the ability to successfully pursue plans for the future hinges on having great connections and taking time to invest in personal and professional development. What they may not be able to explain is what this looks like. This week over 500 of the top agricultural students from universities and colleges across the nation will travel to Kansas City, Mo., to pursue these very things - valuable connections and personal and professional development. For four days, Nov. 1-4, these students will engage with agriculture and food industry professionals at the Agriculture Future of America Leaders Conference. The AFA Leaders Conference is designed to give students the soft skills they need to put their scholastic and leadership training into action. Student delegates are chosen through a competitive application process and their participation is funded through a variety of means including sponsorship from their school or industry businesses and communities that partner with AFA. In the four days the students will be at the Conference, they will take part in engaging sessions, interactive panels, an Opportunity Fair and many opportunities for networking and connecting to their peers and industry professionals. According to Nancy Barcus, AFA vice president of leader and organization development, "The AFA Leaders Conference is a unique opportunity to convene with fellow talented, passionate and committed peers to focus on their role as future leaders to the agriculture and food industries while interacting with those that lead our industry today." In conjunction with Conference, AFA will be hosting a celebration of agriculture Nov. 2, honoring two individuals who have been identified as the 2012 AFA Leader in Agriculture Award recipients because of their commitment to the agriculture industry and willingness to help develop the next generation of agriculture leaders. Recipients, Howard G. Buffett, Illinois farmer and philanthropist, and Dr. Barry Flinchbaugh, Kansas State University agricultural economics professor and policy expert, will be sharing with students and guests how they have personally followed their passion for agriculture into rewarding lifeworks.
