Jan. 2, 2013 BrownfieldAgNews reports: A strike that could have shut down all major ports along the East Coast and Texas has been averted. In a release issued last Friday, George Cohen, Director for Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service said an agreement has been reached between the US Maritime Alliance and the International Longshoremen's Association. Cohen says, "The container royalty payment issue has been agreed upon in principle by the parties, subject to achieving an overall collective bargaining agreement." He adds the parties have agreed to an additional extension of 30 days - during that time the parties will negotiate the remaining unresolved issues. The current extension was set to expire last Saturday. Had an agreement not been reached - it could have become a major issue for both pork and beef exports. Tweet |
