Jan. 11, 2013 Source: Univ. of Illinois news release The 4-H Ag Science Day program, sponsored by University of Illinois Extension, was selected to receive the 2012 Revolution of Responsibility award ($3,000) from the National 4-H Council. Students in this program participated in the 4-H National Youth Science Day (NYSD) Eco-Bot Challenge. Lisa Bouillion Diaz, an Extension specialist in 4-H youth development, said, "Twenty-nine high school youth from Century Middle-Senior High School in Ullin, Ill., taught over 200 younger students as part of their 4-H Ag Science Day. In the Eco-Bot Challenge, the younger students used cups and straws to manipulate the Eco-Bot's movement and creatively designed what they believed would be the most effective barriers in helping the Eco-Bot clean up an oil spill. They tested their theories to find what didn't work and what worked best." The teen leaders were mentored by Dena Woods, 4-H Program coordinator; Brent Miller, 4-H volunteer and teacher; and Patti Faughn, 4-H youth development educator. As 4-H Youth Science Ambassadors, these teens traveled to two other schools in their community to get other youth excited about robotics and science. "Similar programs were conducted across the state with the support of U of I Extension 4-H staff and volunteers," said Diaz, "reaching 85 different groups and over 3,500 youth in grades elementary through high school. This year, over 267 Illinois 4-H Youth Science Ambassadors were involved in helping to provide this learning opportunity for other students." The Revolution of Responsibility award is one of three Innovation Awards given by the National 4-H Council to state and local 4-H programs that hold NYSD events that are determined to be the best in promoting interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers, community service, and outreach opportunities. The Revolution of Responsibility award recognizes an NYSD event that offers an opportunity to have true community impact through service projects, events, or other creative challenges. Tweet |
