RECENT RAINS RAISE MISSISSIPPI RIVER'S LEVEL
BrownfieldAgNews reports:

Weekend rains have helped eased barge traffic concerns on parts of the Mississippi River hampered by low water levels caused by the drought.

Several shippers along the river in Missouri and Illinois have increased their barge shipments of grains and other commodities, to make the most of the higher water.

Work by the Corps of Engineers to remove rock pinnacles just south of St. Louis, to east navigation at Thebes, Illinois, is ahead of schedule. Mike Peterson, Corps spokesman for the St. Louis District tells Brownfield in the removal process, they've deepened the channel an extra two feet and the rain has also helped.

"Right now, we're seeing some much needed relief on the middle Mississippi River due to some rains," Peterson says, "We've seen, in the past 24 hours, the river gauge at Thebes has gone up about four feet, so, we've got lots of room there.

"The Coast Guard has lifted their draft restriction as a result. So, we've been able to keep the channel open."

Peterson says they expect the river level to hover between 12 and 13 feet at least for the next couple of days. The levels, beyond that, depend on more moisture. He adds, "We've been winning some battles but the campaign continues."

And, that's because the drought continues.
