YOUNG FARMERS, RANCHERS HONORED BY FARM BUREAU IN PROGRAM SPONSORED BY STIHL
Source: STIHL news release

American agriculture is more diverse and more demanding on farmers and ranchers than ever before. STIHL Inc. is proud to continue its work promoting excellence, innovation and advancement in the agriculture industry by sponsoring the American Farm Bureau Federation's (AFBF) Young Farmers and Ranchers (YF&R) Awards for the ninth year.

STIHL sponsored the Achievement Award, Discussion Meet and Excellence in Agriculture competitions, which took place at the 94th American Farm Bureau Federation Annual Meeting in Nashville, Tenn.

"Young farmers and ranchers face numerous challenges," said Roger Phelps, promotional communications manager for STIHL Inc. "From the cost of acquisition and ownership, to environmental and regulatory challenges, America's farmers and ranchers need to be more knowledgeable and sophisticated than ever. The American Farm Bureau YF&R program is developing the next generation of leader and STIHL is proud to be a part of it."

"Young farmers and ranchers are the future of agriculture, but they face many challenges as consumer demand changes and the political environment shifts," said American Farm Bureau Federation President Bob Stallman.

"Through training, like the three YF&R competitions, they are better prepared to meet those challenges head on. STIHL's sponsorship of these competitions further provides young farmers the opportunity and incentive to stand up and speak out about American agriculture helping to ensure the future of our industry."

The Achievement Award, the Discussion Meet and the Excellence in Agriculture awards recognize farmers between the ages of 18-35 who demonstrate knowledge of and achievement in agriculture and commitment to promoting the agriculture industry. Each STIHL award recipient received a prize worth $3,000 in cash and STIHL product.

The Achievement Award recognizes young farmers and ranchers who have excelled in their farming or ranching operations and exhibited superior leadership abilities. Participants are evaluated on a combination of their agricultural operation's growth and financial progress, Farm Bureau leadership and leadership outside of Farm Bureau.

Ryan and Misty Bivens of Kentucky won the Achievement award and are the winners of a 2013 Chevrolet or GMC truck plus free registration to the 2013 AFBF YF&R Leadership Conference.

The STIHL award recipients for the Achievement Award were Michael Springer of Kansas, Dan and Mikki Hosman of Arkansas and John and Alicia Boelts of Arizona.

The Discussion Meet simulates a committee meeting in which active discussion and participation are expected. Participants are evaluated on their ability to exchange ideas and information on a predetermined topic. Dillon Kjerstad of Arizona won the Discussion Meet award and is the winner of a 2013 Chevrolet or GMC truck plus free registration to the 2013 AFBF YF&R Leadership Conference.

The STIHL award recipients in the Discussion Meet were Ann Larson of Illinois, Stacy Vincent of Kentucky and Allison Honea of South Carolina.

The Excellence in Agriculture award recognizes young farmers and ranchers who do not derive the majority of their income from an agricultural operation, but who actively contribute and grow through their involvement in agriculture, their leadership ability, and participation in Farm Bureau and other organizations.

Dana Allen Fisher of Virginia won the Excellence in Agriculture award and will receive his choice of a 2013 Chevrolet or GMC truck and free registration to the 2013 AFBF YF&R Leadership Conference. The STIHL award recipients in the Excellence in Agriculture competition were Kelby and Kathie Iverson of Utah, David and Meghan Corvin of Tennessee and Jarod and Sarah Bowser of Kansas.
