USDA: CATTLE IN FEEDLOT RISE, REVERSES TREND
BrownfieldAgNews reports:

The latest cattle on feed report from USDA shows an end to the multi-month streak of lower placements.

During January, 1.876 million cattle were placed in feedlots, a 2% year to year increase and the first rise in more than half a year due to the continued poor condition of wheat pastures in the Plains. Before the report, the range of estimates ran from 97.5% to 104.0%, for an average of 100.3%.

By size, placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600 pounds were 445,000 head, 600 to 699 pounders were 395,000 head, while 700 to 799 pound placements were 535,000 head and placements of cattle weighing 800 pounds and heavier were 501,000 head.

Marketings during January were pegged at 1.917 million head, up 6% on the year with one more workday in January 2013 than in January 2012. Pre-report expectations ranged from 103.2% to 106.6% with the average guess a 104.7%.

The total number of cattle on feed in the U.S. as of January 1 was 11.073 million head, down 6% from last year. The average estimate was 93.8% of a year ago with projections ranging from 93.3% to 94.3%.

Other disappearances were 79,000 head, 6% above a year ago.

Allendale's David Kohli says the numbers look friendly.
