Mar. 20, 2013 Source: AEM news release AEM leadership took the Association's pro-manufacturing message to Capitol Hill March 14 during meetings with key Congressional leaders. Members of the AEM Board of Directors and Sector Boards met with congressmen who will play important roles in passing legislation that affects the equipment manufacturing industry. AEM's Washington, D.C., advocacy team arranged the gatherings, held prior to AEM's annual spring board meetings. The morning began with CE sector board directors joining House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman Bill Shuster (R-PA) and Ranking Member Nick Rahall (D-WV). There, they discussed long-term infrastructure needs and heard from AEM members on the importance of investment in order to keep the U.S. economy competitive. Both Reps. Shuster and Rahall expressed the need to work together to make sure our nation's infrastructure is viable for years to come. Some AEM members also met with Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-OR), a member of the influential Ways and Means Committee, to confer on options for infrastructure financing and tax reform to drive U.S. manufacturing growth and competitiveness. AG sector board directors visited the House Agriculture Committee to meet with Chairman Frank Lucas (R-OK) and Ranking Member Collin Peterson (D-MN), to emphasize the role the agriculture economy plays in manufacturing and the need for a long-term Farm Bill. Both Members of Congress stated the need for more robust public education on the necessity of a farm bill for America's economic future, particularly given the backdrop of the current budgetary pressures facing the federal government. The AEM Board hosted Rep. Reid Ribble (R-WI) as their special guest during their leadership luncheon. As a member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure, Agriculture and Budget committees, Rep. Ribble has been a champion for the equipment manufacturing industry. Later that afternoon, the Board members met with House Deputy Whip Pete Roskam (R-IL) and freshman Republican House Members at a small gathering in the Capitol. These meetings with Congress are important because they remind Members of Congress of the critical role AEM members play in the economy and job creation. The meetings provided an open and frank conversation of what needs to be done in order to support AEM members and the industry as a whole. The AEM Advocacy team will continue to encourage and assist member companies to meet with their elected Members of Congress and build strong relationships in order to keep our issues at the forefront of their agenda.
