RED MEAT PRODUCTION DOWN 6%
BrownfieldAgNews reports:

USDA reports commercial red meat production during February was 3.673 billion pounds, down 6% from February 2012.

Beef production came out at 1.874 billion pounds, a 7% year to year decline, with the slaughter 8% lower at 2.359 million head and the average live weight up 13 pounds at 1,320 pounds.

Veal was reported at 9.0 million pounds, 9% less than last year with the kill down 1% to 59,600 head and the average live weight losing 18 pounds to 258 pounds.

Pork production was pegged at 1.779 billion pounds, 6% below a year ago with the slaughter 5% lower at 8.594 million head and the average live weight down a pound to 277 pounds.

Lamb and mutton production came out at 11.5 million pounds, 7% under last year with the kill 2% lower at 161,700 head and the average live weight down seven pounds to 142 pounds.

For the year to date, U.S. commercial red meat production is 8.021 billion pounds, slightly less than the January/February 2012 total of 8.037 billion pounds.
