Latham in the Digital Vanguard
Latham Seeds first offered an online seed ordering option through their site at www.LathamSeeds.com in 2008. The company was also among early adapters of using social media for enabling two-way communication and creating community with customers. They established their blog in 2008, a company Facebook page in 2009, and the company Twitter account in early 2010.
"Latham Hi-Tech Seeds uses its independence to bring our customers the largest variety of seed offerings in the industry. It only makes sense that we offer customers technology-powered options for interacting with us," said Latham, who manages the company's many digital communications channels. "Nothing will ever replace face-to-face communications and good old-fashioned phone calls with customers. We see these other avenues as simply empowering our farmer-customers to interact with Latham Seeds more frequently and on their own terms. The more avenues we have to communicate and interact with customers, the better."
Latham said the company continues to look at tablet- and smartphone-based apps that could offer benefits to customers. The family-owned seed company is also using the power of computer and GPS technology in its second-generation Seed-2-Soil® service. The service combines computer power with the soil and yield data gathered by today's precision farming practices to help customers make the best possible seed selections for their growing acres.
"For us, technology is just another tool that helps American farmers lead the world in the production of food, fiber and fuel," said Latham. "Latham Hi-Tech Seeds is proud to be a partner in farmers' increasingly savvy use of high-tech tools."
