Growers, millers, bakers and other stakeholders generally agree that wheat, the globe's largest crop, is also one of the most important - but they don't share the same definition of wheat quality. To tackle this inconsistency and highlight the importance of collaboration, Syngenta has developed a new informational video.

"When it comes to wheat, quality is in the eye of the beholder," said Norm Dreger, Syngenta head of cereals in North America.

"However, we can all agree how important this crop is to the world. This video highlights the importance of collaborating from the breeder to the consumer and everyone in between to help realize wheat's full potential."

Wheat quality is a key focal point for Syngenta, which operates a quality lab that conducts more than 32,000 tests per year to test factors like protein level, hardness and water absorption. Information from these quality tests guides breeders as they develop new varieties for markets across the globe.

Syngenta also recently hosted a Wheat Quality Summit that brought together growers, bakers and millers to talk quality.

"As North America's largest wheat breeder, we take an ears-to-the-ground approach," Dreger said. "The quality lab and events like the quality summit help us ensure that we are matching new varieties' quality profiles to end-user needs and expectations."

Syngenta also supports several innovative industry programs, including the Kansas Wheat Innovation Center "Speak for Wheat" Test Kitchen, a high-tech facility for testing hundreds of new and existing wheat recipes developed by the Kansas Wheat Commission to promote increased usage of wheat.

In addition to comments from Dreger, the video features breeder Rollie Sears, quality lab manager Cathy Butti, wheat grower Bill Ongstad, and Darcy Pawlik, Syngenta cereals crop portfolio head.
