IOWA OFFICIALS TO HOST HEARING ON EPA'S PROPOSED RFS REDUCTION
BrownfieldAgNews reports:

Iowa officials will host a public hearing on the EPA's proposal to cut ethanol volume requirements in the Renewable Fuels Standard (RFS).

The event will take place January 23rd in Des Moines. Farmers and officials from Iowa and other Midwestern states are expected to participate.

Iowa secretary of agriculture Bill Northey says the purpose of the hearing is to provide people outside of Washington, D.C. the opportunity to testify about the importance of the RFS. Northey says based on conversations he's had with some of those involved in formulating the policy, it's not necessarily a done deal.

"They made a point of saying this a 'proposal'-that often the EPA will have a final rule that is different based on the input that's provided," Northey says.

Northey says while the cuts may not have much of a short-term impact on the ethanol industry, he's more concerned about the long-term impact, including the opportunity to increase to 15 percent ethanol.

"There's several different barriers, but definitely if the RFS was not one of the levers that helped push E15, I think we certainly could look back at this in the future and say this was where E15 stumbled to a place that didn't allow that industry to grow."

The deadline for public comment on the EPA proposal is January 28th.
