POULTRY PRODUCTION UP 1% IN 2013

According to the Department of Agriculture, poultry production for December 2013 was up 6% on the year at 3.558 billion pounds.

The preliminary live weight of all poultry was 4.714 billion pounds, 7% more than a year ago, with young chickens accounting for 4.105 billion pounds of the total. All chickens were 4.169 billion pounds, with turkeys at 529.215 million and ducks at 15.781 million pounds

Young chickens averaged 5.99 pounds per bird and mature chickens averaged 5.43 pounds, while turkeys averaged 30.7 pounds and ducks averaged 6.89 pounds.

Ante-mortem condemnations were 10.965 million pounds, 0.23% of the preliminary live weight, and post-mortem condemnations were 36.076 million pounds, 1% of total production.

2013 U.S. poultry production totaled 44.267 billion pounds, up 1% from 2012.
