MEAT PROCESSING DOWN 3% FOR THE YEAR
BrownfieldAgNews reports:

Commercial red meat production during April 2014 was down 3% on the year at 3.977 billion pounds, with lower kill rates for cattle and hogs cancelling out larger live weights.

According to USDA, beef production was 2.043 billion pounds, 4% lower than April 2013, with the kill down 5% at 2.595 million head and average live weight up ten pounds to 1,306 pounds. Veal came out at 8.4 million pounds, 8% less than last year, with the slaughter dropping 17% to 48,700 head and the average live weight jumping 28 pounds to 294 pounds.

Pork was reported at 1.911 billion pounds, a 2% year to year decline, with the slaughter decreasing 5% to 8.855 million head and the average live weight gaining ten pounds to 287 pounds.

Lamb and mutton production was pegged at 15.2 million pounds, up 13% on the year, with the slaughter increasing 15% to 221,000 head and the average live weight losing 3 pounds to 137 pounds.

For January to April 2014, commercial red meat production is 15.694 billion pounds, 3% lower than January to April 2013.
