NOBLE FOUNDATION RELEASES HOOP HOUSE CONSTRUCTION GUIDE
Source: Noble Foundation news release

Those looking to build a hoop house now have access to a free resource to aid in their planning and construction process.

Noble Foundation Horticulture Consultant Steve Upson has authored The Noble Foundation High Tunnel Hoop House Construction Guide, which draws on Upson's 17 years of experience designing, constructing and using hoop houses. The publication contains a detailed review of the various models of permanent and moveable hoop houses, as well as traditional and novel building materials and methods used in construction.

In the past, Upson had been hesitant to produce a construction guide because hoop house design and construction techniques have constantly evolved during the past 20 years. However, with many extension and grower-authored publications on hoop house crop culture and few detailed publications on construction, he set forth to develop a resource to meet the need.

"My intent was not to offer a complete set of construction plans for any particular type or size of hoop house," Upson said, "but rather to introduce novice growers and hoop house builders to the various tools and techniques used in constructing a wide range of hoop house models.

Information in the publication is presented in a chronological order that mirrors the construction process. The various procedures and techniques detailed are applicable to both prefabricated, commercial structures and homemade structures.

Considerable attention is given to site selection, site preparation and house layout, common challenges for many first-time builders. A list of tools and supplies is provided at the end of the publication; however, required materials will vary depending on the type of hoop house constructed.

"Admittedly, my experience with hoop house structures has a Southern flavor," Upson said. "Therefore, the guidelines may or may not have application in other regions of the country. However, careful study of this publication prior to purchasing a hoop house kit or materials to custom-build a structure will save the builder time, money and frustration."

The 96-page, full-color publication is accessible on the Noble Foundation website at www.noble.org/ag/horticulture/hoop-house-construction-guide.
