VATICAN SET TO SUPPORT BIOTECHNOLOGY
National Association of Wheat Growers (NAWG) reports:

Reversing Course, Vatican Said to Support Food Biotechnology

Truth About Trade and Technology reported this week that the Vatican will release a report next month officially offering support for genetically modified food as an answer to world hunger.

The Vatican had been neutral on the issue, but is said to have been swayed by scientific evidence of biotechnology's safety and the continued problem of world hunger in addition to the Bible's comments on man's dominance over nature.

The Vatican's support for biotechnology would be a major boon for those who believe GM technology can help protect crops and increase yields, increasing the stability and size of the world's food supply. Others in the U.S., Europe and Asia who were previously neutral or opposed to biotechnology are also reconsidering their stances in the face of a growing world population and tight food supplies.

The U.S. wheat industry is supportive of biotechnology and is working with the larger wheat chain and input companies to move toward the inclusion of genetically modified traits in wheat as soon as is practicable.
