Weekly Comments: Grain futures started the week under further pressure
from USDA’s big corn planting intentions estimate, but turned higher as weather
concerns became an issue. Rising potential for planting delays supported corn
futures, while fears of winterkill damage sent wheat futures sharply higher
on Thursday amid forecasts for freezing temperatures as far south as the
Texas Panhandle and the Mississippi Delta region. Soybean prices chopped
sideways amid ideas weather and lower corn prices could boost soybean
plantings. Live cattle futures rallied sharply following unexpectedly strong
cash trade in Plains direct markets.
