Weekly Comments: Corn futures started the week under further pressure from USDA’s huge plantings estimated, but managed to bounce back a bit as oversold technical indicators and hot weekend forecasts spurred speculative short covering late in the week. Soybean futures continued to find strong support from lower-than-expected U.S. plantings, but gains were limited by overbought conditions and large old-crop stocks. Wheat futures regained some of the previous week’s losses as harvest delays in the southern Plains and western Europe kept the market nervous about tight world supplies. Live cattle futures surged strongly on indications of a seasonal cash price low. Hog futures held relatively steady with support coming from slightly firmer cash markets and futures discount to cash.
