Weekly Comments: Corn and soybean futures were propped up last week by lower USDA crop condition
ratings and hot weather across the Midwest. However, the price rebound was
limited by forecasts for weekend rains across dry areas of the Midwest. Wheat futures held firm in choppy
trade on support from continued strong U.S. wheat export sales and concern
about tight world wheat supplies. Live cattle futures gave some ground as
speculators took profits on long positions. Lean hog futures charged higher
on a renewed wave of commodity fund buying and heightened speculation that China would soon buy a significant
amount of U.S. pork. The gains came despite
weaker cash market fundamentals.
