Weekly Comments: Soybean futures fell back under pressure from speculative
long liquidation triggered by a slowdown in Chinese buying and a sharp drop in
crude oil futures. Some of the selling may have been month-end profit-taking. Corn futures were
pressured by soybean price weakness, but found good support from continued
strong export demand and stronger wheat prices. Wheat futures surged again on
nervousness about Argentina's crop and continued dry weather
in the U.S. HRW wheat belt. Cattle futures turned sharply lower under
pressure from fund liquidation and talk that market-ready cattle supplies will
start to increase before the end of December. Lean hog futures slipped a bit
under pressure from their premium to cash markets, despite an upturn in cash
prices. Cotton futures came under renewed pressure from speculative selling
amid a lack of supportive news.
