Weekly Comments: Grain and soybean futures markets turned extremely
volatile last week, crashing limit down on Wednesday as weakness in world
stock markets triggered a new wave of recession fears throughout most
commodities markets. Prices recovered on Thursday and Friday on support from the
Federal Reserve's emergency interest rate cut and indications of strong export
demand. Wheat prices continued to find support from very tight world supplies
with Minneapolis spring wheat futures surging to new record highs. Live cattle futures firmed slightly on support from speculative short covering as pressure on cash
cattle markets eased a bit. Lean hog futures rebounded on signs that the
cash market had put in a significant seasonal low. Cold weather also
contributed to a slowdown in hog marketings. Cotton futures fell back under
pressure from weakness in grain futures and Indications of slower world
cotton usage.
