Weekly Comments: Grain and soybean futures started the week strongly on ideas a U.S. government bailout of the financial sector would be inflationary, but inflation concerns gave way to new fears of recession as Congress struggled to reach agreement on a bailout plan. Slack demand from end-users also weighed on corn and soybean futures. Wheat futures gave back early-week gains under pressure from bearish demand news and favorable winter wheat planting weather. Live cattle futures continued to slide on commodity fund long liquidation spurred by recession fears and disappointing cash cattle trade. Lean hog futures were mixed on the week with the nearby contract gaining ground again on support from stronger cash hog markets. Cotton futures continued to be driven lower by fund liquidation spurred by economic concerns.
