Comments: Grain and soybean futures continued to be buoyed by speculative short covering and technical buying last week in thin holiday trading activity. Concerns about South American crop prospects remained supportive for prices. A strong rally by crude oil futures in the final trading session of 2008 provided outside support. Slow demand limited corn futures strength. Cattle futures rallied on technical buying, U.S. stock market gains and expectations for tighter fed cattle supplies. Hog futures rebounded strongly on support from technically-driven short covering and a smaller-than-expected Dec. 1 market hog inventory. Cotton futures found further support from speculative position evening and expectations for another sharp drop in cotton plantings in 2009. |
