Comments: Grain and soybean futures firmed last week as tight supply/demand forecasts and technical strength spurred speculative profit taking on short positions and end-user buying. Corn and soybean futures found fundamental support from dry weather across growing areas in Argentina and southern Brazil. Dry conditions in the U.S. HRW wheat belt remained supportive for wheat futures, but strong rains in Midwest SRW wheat areas weighed on prices. Grain price gains were limited by further strength in the value of the dollar as traders remained nervous about Chinese monetary tightening and European debt problems. Live cattle futures extended gains on strong cash fundamentals including a $3.50-$4.00 jump in southern Plains cash cattle prices and further strength in wholesale beef prices. Lean hog futures were boosted by ideas cash hog markets and wholesale pork prices had put in a seasonal low amid strong packer demand for hogs. Cotton futures continued to collapse under pressure from fund liquidation spurred by technical weakness and the stronger dollar.
