Comments: Grain futures surged again last week with soybean futures leading the way higher on technical strength and anticipation of strong Chinese demand. Corn followed soybeans higher with help from tight old-crop supplies and talk of U.S. acreage being switched. Soybean futures finished the week with a string of 10 straight higher closes, but were extremely overbought on technical indicators. Commodity fund buying powered much of the strength as large speculators expanded their net long positions in corn and soybean futures by 30% and 25% respectively. In the Chicago wheat market, active covering of a large fund short position amid concerns the market was oversold was the main supportive factor. Dry forecasts for the Plains and high soybean prices helped spur the short covering. Livestock futures had a mixed week with live cattle futures surging back near recent highs on firm cash fundamentals before giving back gains on demand concerns. Lean hog futures were pressured early in the week then rallied on seasonal buying and expectations for tight beef supplies to boost pork demand.
