Comments: Corn and soybean futures were crushed last week as investors ditched long positions in both markets en masse. Soybean futures led the collapse on technically-driven liquidation of a record fund long position and macroeconomic concerns, with bullish supply/demand forecasts from USDA providing only a day of support on Thursday. After starting the week stronger, corn futures nosedived as end-user interest in old-crop corn dried up. A higher old-crop carryout estimate from USDA added to the selling pressure. Favorable planting progress and crop development was a negative factor in both the corn and soybean markets and should continue to weigh on prices. Wheat futures followed corn and soybeans lower despite supportive U.S. and world carryout estimates from USDA. Winter wheat harvest pressure also weighed on prices, while wheat's discount to corn was supportive. Live cattle futures spent the week much of the week edging higher on support from their discount to cash, but fell back on Friday under pressure from weak beef prices. Lean hog futures trade was flat with weak cash markets offsetting support from technical short covering. Cotton futures were hammered as bearish USDA data and macroeconomic concerns spurred major selling. Click on the Brock logo or call 1-800-558-3431 for more info on our services.
