Comments: Grain and soybean futures wound up mixed last week as corn and wheat futures sold off in the wake of Friday's USDA reports after USDA pegged the 2012-13 U.S. corn carryout in line with trade expectations. Corn futures briefly surged to new all-time highs immediately after the release of the reports, but then reversed hard to finish lower as traders focused on cuts to expected usage. Soybean futures, on the other hand, finished the week strongly as a lower-than-expected U.S. soybean crop forecast of 2.691 billion bushels and fresh Chinese demand provided good fundamental support. Wheat futures felt pressure from larger-than-expected U.S. production and ending stocks estimates. Livestock futures had a firm week with live cattle contracts pulled higher by stronger cash cattle and wholesale beef prices. Lean hog futures bounced back from the previous week's sell off on support from speculative profit taking and their discount to cash prices. Cotton futures held firm most of the week, but sold off as USDA raised its estimates of U.S. and world production and ending stocks.
