Comments: Grain futures were little changed last week as supply concerns supported prices against pressure from weakness in soybean futures and a strong dollar. Investors continued to reduce risk exposure ahead of the U.S. presidential election across most agricultural markets. Soybean futures came under pressure from bearish private estimates of U.S. crop production and improving weather conditions in South America. Weak export demand and ethanol production remained a negative factor in the corn market, but talk South American was running out of old-crop corn to export was supportive. Wheat futures found support from poor crop ratings across the U.S. HRW wheat belt and disappointing Australian harvest results. Demand concerns spurred by “super-storm” Sandy's devastating impact on U.S. East Coast as well as seasonal factors pressured livestock futures, especially live cattle futures as the choice beef cutout value fell more than $4.00 over the course of the week. Sandy did not have a major impact on the production side of U.S. agriculture. Cotton futures came under further pressure from demand concerns, the stronger dollar and and technical selling.
