Comments: Old-crop corn and soybean futures last week continued to find fundamental support from tight U.S. supplies and strong cash basis bids. New-crop soybean futures were pulled to modest gains by the old-crop price strength and concerns about slow planting progress in southern growing areas, but new-crop corn futures fell on rising expectations for a sharp jump in U.S. production amid talk improved weather could allow near-record weekly planting progress. Wheat futures remained under pressure from USDA's forecasts for a larger world wheat carryout and reduced U.S. exports in 2013-14. Technical selling and anticipation of the U.S. winter wheat harvest also weighed on wheat prices. Cotton futures continued to chop sideways as concerns about U.S. planting delays were offset by pressure from a stronger dollar and a drop in weekly export sales. Livestock futures had another mixed week with lean hog futures rising after finding early-week support from further strength in cash hog/wholesale pork prices. Live cattle futures were pressured by anticipation of a seasonal top in the U.S. beef market and expectations for Friday's USDA Cattle-on-Feed Report to show a big jump in April feedlot placements versus a year earlier. Those expectations were confirmed after Friday's close as USDA pegged April placements of cattle on feed 15.1% above a year earlier.
