Comments: Corn and soybean futures were pressured by rising U.S.
harvest activity and technical weakness.
Soybean futures collapsed to their lowest levels in nearly a month on active long liquidation spurred by their wide premium to corn futures and the easing of an extremely tight cash market supply situation with the onset of active harvest in the U.S.
Delta region.
The Federal Reserve Bank's decision not to “taper” its quantitative easing activities and subsequent weakness in the U.S.
dollar provided a very short-lived boost for grain futures at midweek, but traders quickly turned their focus back to the harvest fundamentals.
Wheat futures managed to hold small gains on support from the weak dollar and continued good U.S.
export sales, but were unable to generate real upward momentum amid corn price weakness and expectations for rising export competition.
Livestock futures were mixed, with lean hog futures breaking lower on Friday amid signs cash hog prices might be topping out and expectations for larger hog supplies.
Live cattle futures rallied on firmer cash markets and expectations for Friday afternoon's USDA Cattle-on-Feed Report to be supportive.
That report was bullish, pegging the Sept.
1 supply of cattle on feed at a 10-year low.
Cotton futures came under renewed pressure from speculative selling despite the weak dollar and slow U.S.
crop development.
