Comments: Grain futures lost a small amount of ground on the week in thin, choppy holiday trading with the corn market remaining under pressure from Chinese rejections of U.S. corn and DDGS imports due to the presence of Syngenta's MIR 162 transgenic corn variety, which China has still not approved for import. Strong weekly corn export sales were a supportive factor. Soybean futures trade remained extremely choppy as support from hot, dry weather in Argentina was offset forecasts for improved rainfall and by mostly favorable conditions in Brazil. Speculation that Chinese buyers will shift soybean cargos from U.S. origin to South American remained a negative market factor. Wheat futures made new lows for the third week in a row amid a continued shortage of supportive fundamental news, but selling was tempered by year-end speculative position evening and oversold technical indicators. It was a mixed week for livestock futures with live cattle futures gaining strongly on support from record high cash prices in U.S. Plains markets amid tightening supplies. Lean hog futures, however, were weak under pressure from continued softness in cash prices. Friday's USDA Hogs and Pigs Report, however, did show a negative impact on supplies from porcine epidemic diarrhea and pegged the U.S. breeding herd 1.1% below a year earlier amid expectations for expansion. Spot cotton futures rallied further on support from year-end speculative position evening. Click on the Brock logo or call 1-800-558-3431 for more info on our services.
